Before the digital passport itself is required in 2027, manufacturers of EV batteries must provide a Carbon Footprint Declaration. This is the first major compliance hurdle of the regulation.
Methodology: Product Environmental Footprint (PEF)
The calculation is not a simple Scope 1/2/3 estimate. It must follow the strict rules laid out in the JRC's PEFCR for high specific energy rechargeable batteries. You must declare emissions in kg CO2 equivalent per kWh of total energy provided over the battery's expected service life.
Mandatory Life Cycle Stages
- Raw material acquisition and pre-processing (Mining, refining).
- Main product manufacturing (Cell and pack assembly).
- Distribution (Transport to the OEM).
- End of life and recycling (Estimated credits/burdens).
