Data Interoperability Standards
Understanding the technical schemas that ensure battery passports can be read globally.
Why Interoperability Matters
If every manufacturer creates a custom JSON schema for their passport, the data becomes useless to regulators and recyclers who must process thousands of different battery models. The regulation mandates open interoperability standards.
The Role of the Global Battery Alliance (GBA)
While the EU sets the legal requirement, technical consortiums like the GBA and standardization bodies like CENELEC are defining the actual JSON-LD schemas. These schemas ensure that a field named cycle_life means exactly the same thing, mathematically and structurally, regardless of the manufacturer.
Key Technical Pillars
- JSON-LD: Linked data formats allow the passport to reference external vocabularies.
- Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs): Cryptographic verification that the data was actually published by the claimed OEM.
