Performance Classes (A-G)
How the EU will categorize and eventually restrict batteries based on carbon efficiency.
Categorizing Efficiency
Once the initial Carbon Footprint Declarations are collected, the EU Commission will analyze the market data to establish Performance Classes, much like the A-G energy efficiency ratings seen on household appliances like refrigerators.
The Pathway to Maximum Thresholds
The performance classes are a stepping stone. Once the market is categorized, the EU will implement maximum life cycle carbon footprint thresholds. Batteries exceeding these thresholds will be legally barred from entering the European market.
Phase 1: Declaration
Manufacturers report their exact CO2e per kWh.
Phase 2: Classification
Batteries are graded A through G based on the market distribution of emissions.
