Physical requirements for printing and engraving the Battery Passport QR code.
Physical Durability Requirements
The QR code is the only physical link to the digital passport. Therefore, Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 mandates severe durability requirements. It must remain readable for the entire lifespan of the battery, surviving thermal cycles, vibrations, and chemical exposure.
For most EV and industrial applications, simple adhesive stickers will fail compliance. Laser engraving on the metal casing or high-durability riveted plates are the standard approaches.
Contrast and Readability
The code must be easily scannable by standard commercial equipment in typical lighting conditions. IEC standard 61406 (formerly DIN SPEC 91406) provides the technical framework for the physical marking of equipment, which is heavily referenced by passport implementations.
Key Specifications
- Must resolve to a valid URI.
- Must be printed in high contrast (typically black on white/silver).
- If the battery is too small for a printed code, it may be printed on the packaging, though this rarely applies to EV/Industrial classes.
