The EU Battery Passport fundamentally changes supply chain data requirements. You can no longer rely solely on your Tier 1 pack assemblers; you must drill down to the cell manufacturers and material refiners.
The Challenge of "Primary Data"
For crucial metrics like the Carbon Footprint Declaration (required in 2025 for EVs), the EU mandates the use of primary data for the most carbon-intensive processes. This means you cannot simply multiply the battery's weight by a generic industry average for NMC or LFP chemistry.
You must obtain the actual energy consumption and emissions data from the specific facilities that mined the lithium, refined the cobalt, and manufactured the active cathode materials.
The Minimum Viable Mapping Depth
Common Mistakes in Mapping
- Using Secondary LCA Databases: Relying entirely on Ecoinvent or Sphera databases. The PEFCR strictly limits secondary data to background processes (like grid electricity mix), not foreground chemical processing.
- Assuming Suppliers Will Share Unilaterally: Tier 3 chemical refiners view their exact yields and energy usage as trade secrets. You will need secure data enclaves or third-party auditors to pass verified CO2e numbers up the chain without revealing the raw underlying BOM.
- Ignoring Due Diligence: Annex X requires not just carbon data, but proof that the Cobalt and Lithium were not mined using child labor or causing severe ecological damage.
